COUPLES THERAPY

A happy couple kissing and smiling after successful couples therapy/marriage counseling

Despite the joyous nature of love, romantic relationships and marriages can be challenging. If your partnership is relatively new, it is natural to anticipate a constant surge of excitement and an ever-expanding love. The reality, however, is different. You might start to notice personal differences and question the mutual future. You might perceive your concerns as potential warning signs or even as deal-breakers. It is common for people to have doubts about their relationship, and you are not alone. If you would like my assistance navigating your concerns, I would be honored to support you.

On the other hand, in a long-term relationship, you may experience a decline in emotional closeness, intimacy, or trust. Demands and responsibilities of daily life might completely overpower your relationship. You might start to see your partner as a roommate or a friend. Even worse, your conflicts might be so severe that you even view each other as enemies. Keeping long-term relationships and marriages gratifying can be incredibly challenging. If you would like my assistance in reenergizing and strengthening your relationship, I would be honored to support you as a couple.

IMPORTANT: Please read this if you find yourself in a relationship with an abusive partner. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intimate partner violence "affects millions of people in the United States each year". Most couples therapy approaches are not suitable for situations where one partner uses control and fear against another. The type of couples therapy I offer is not appropriate for relationships with a significant power imbalance between partners. If you are experiencing partner violence within your relationship, please consider these resources for support. You deserve safety and respect. Even though it might feel like you are alone, know that help is available. I hope you can get the help you need to regain your sense of self and security.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SUCCESSFUL COUPLES THERAPY MAY INCLUDE:

  • Conflict Resolution: You will learn healthy ways to manage and resolve disagreements.

  • Relationship Renewal: You will rediscover the love and affection in your partnership.

  • Shared Growth: You will develop new patterns of interactions that promote relationship stability and growth.

MY APPROACH TO COUPLES THERAPY

I am passionate about supporting couples in overcoming inevitable relationship challenges. In my work with couples, I employ my specialized training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. These esteemed methodologies are effective in reestablishing harmony and fostering deeper mutual understanding. With these tools, I will guide you in enhancing communication, fostering emotional intimacy, and creating a sense of emotional safety. This will allow you to engage with each other authentically and, as a result, experience increased relationship satisfaction.

I have completed level three training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a world-renowned approach based on decades of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman and their colleagues. This approach aims to enhance couples' closeness, improve conflict management, and create shared meaning.

In addition,  I am trained and actively pursuing professional growth in Emotionally Focused Therapy. This approach was developed by one of the leading experts in the field of couples therapy, Dr. Sue Johnson. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples bring awareness to deeper emotional needs and teaches new patterns of interactions. It can enrich understanding and promote secure attachment between partners.

While I have a profound understanding and appreciation for both the Gottman Method and EFT, I am particularly drawn to the latter. I admire EFT’s emphasis on attachment as a universal human need and find its theoretical framework incredibly useful. As an EFT therapist, I am dedicated to helping my clients identify ineffective patterns, overcome negative cycles, and foster deeper emotional connections. If interested, you can learn more about these two methods here: Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
