Are you living with a fear or phobia that limits your life? Maybe it keeps you from flying, driving, certain social situations, or places you would otherwise want to go. Maybe it affects your work, your relationships, or simply the ease with which you move through your day.
For decades, exposure therapy has been considered the gold standard for treating phobias. It works by gradually and repeatedly exposing a person to the source of their fear in a safe, controlled way until the fear response diminishes. It has a solid evidence base and helps many people. It also typically takes anywhere from several weeks to a few months to complete.
What many people do not know is that there is a relatively new approach that may work in far fewer sessions.
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy for Phobia Treatment?
This approach is called Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART. It was developed in 2008 by Laney Rosenzweig, licensed marriage and family therapist, and has since been studied in multiple clinical trials. Research supports its effectiveness as a phobia treatment for specific fears including fear of flying and fear of heights. Other common phobias, such as fear of needles, fear of driving, fear of dogs, fear of spiders, and social phobia, are also areas where ART phobia therapy shows strong potential based on its clinical application and growing evidence base. For people in California looking for a faster path through a fear that has followed them for years, ART is worth knowing about.
The remarkable speed at which ART can help is right there in the name: Accelerated Resolution Therapy. The founder's own book is titled "Too Good to Be True?" and the question mark is understandable. Results this significant, this fast, can be genuinely hard to believe until you experience them.
How Does Accelerated Resolution Therapy Work for Phobias?
Like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, another well-researched trauma and phobia therapy), ART uses bilateral stimulation through guided eye movements to help the brain and nervous system process what is keeping a fear or phobia response active. Where the two differ is in speed and structure. EMDR typically takes anywhere from 6 to 12 sessions, sometimes more. ART is significantly shorter because it is highly focused and structured, working with both the mind and body in a very direct way. It is somatic, therapist-guided, and does not require you to talk through every detail of your fear in order to find relief.
What Happens in an Accelerated Resolution Therapy Session
To give a general sense of what ART looks like in practice: a session might begin with identifying the specific fear or phobia and noticing how it shows up in the body. From there, the therapist guides the client through a focused protocol using eye movements and visualization, working with both mind and body to shift the way the fear is held and experienced. The client remains in control throughout. Research suggests most phobias can be addressed in one to five ART sessions, and in my clinical experience, one to two is often enough.
What is interesting is how clients tend to experience the change. It often feels so natural and integrated that they might not even recognize the huge shift that occurred. They usually leave the session feeling lighter and simply better. The absence of the fear does not demand their attention the way the fear once did. They just move on with their life.
As a therapist I will admit there is something quietly amusing about that. I sometimes wish clients connected the dots back to the session and were as amazed by the results as I am witnessing them. But I am just genuinely glad they are moving through their lives with more ease!
